Anyone have any ideas on how the job market will go next year?
I'm a 4th year Ph.D. candidate who have 3 pubs (and 1 solo R&R) in top field journals, but I'm a student at LRM (I'd say top 75, maybe top 50).
My department can offer me funding to stay my 6th year if I don't enter the market next year, so I was wondering if it might be wiser to stay another year. My ultimate goal is TT AP.
Unfortunately, I'm not sure whether next year will be all that different from the year afterwards. The market will be brutal for many years to come unless the glut of JMCs is addressed.
If your ultimate goal is TT, it would be good for you (and your advisor) to start networking to help get you a postdoc or VAP position. Then about 3 years post-PhD will be about the optimal time to go for a TT position.
