   A slight follow up- I do not enjoy how the media paint Peterson as a backwater crank. Getting a job at Toronto is HARD. Getting tenure at Toronto is even harder. Peterson is probably in the top 0.1% or the field, it’s not like he’s art laffer or Lisa cook. He’s not even coasting on his past accomplishments to bully platforms into broadcasting him yelling at clouds (Kruggles or Summers). He’s treated like a freakshow

   I would say he’s wrong about the causal attribution for why his students aren’t getting jobs (which I doubt- they’re probably either exiting to industry or doing mediocre post docs. Which to many in his strata is a fate worse than death). They aren’t getting jobs because they’re men or even white, they’re not getting jobs because there’s like 50 R1 jobs in a year and they all go to people in their 5th postdoc year at Toronto, Harvard, Yale, Wisconsin, and what have you

   I also remember hearing on a podcast that I listened to that JP had canceled an upcoming appearance he was going to make on their show because he had a lengthy speaking tour scheduled well out into the summer that was going to occupy all of his time for the next several months. Again, it surprises me that he is supervising grad students while maintaining what seems like a heavy extracurricular workload.

    Regardless of the specifics around JP, conditions in academia have been getting progressively worse for white cis males for decades at this point. I remember my father saying that upon achieving tenure, he was told to expect no further advancement as it wouldn't send the right message for a white man like him to be a senior representative of the department. Btw this was in CS of all fields.

    Lol sure. As a white male in his 30s at a top 30 psych department, the proportion of males increases at every level of advancement. Why? Because guys don’t stop working when they have babies, and schools don’t discount those pubs at all (should they? I don’t think so). Female attrition is brutal.

    Out of curiosity, who gets to advance further? I'd expect Azn men to face the same predicament as white men. But CS departments are mainly filled with white and Azn men, both by selection and by talent, no? So that leaves the super minority of women?
