   I'm new in the profession and that journal seems a bit weird to me (very clubbish, but I may be wrong of course). I have a number of questions:

   1. How does it work to get invited to submit there [being invited = to be exempted from paying the huge fees + to get higher chances to get a R&R I suppose?]

   2. Do they would envision publishing experimental / behavioural stuff at JoFE? I saw one genetic paper published recently, which surprised me.

   3. I'm not well connected. Should I forget about submitting my papers there?

   I think it is the most biased of the 3 major journals. Submit there last among the top 3 if you have a paper of sufficient quality.

   I have published there and I am not in the club and was (mostly) unknown at the time.

   I think folks make too much of the differences among the top 3 journals. Looks at any top guy's cv. It's going to show he referees for the top 3 journals. Same darn referees, so what does it matter which journal it went to? There are basically three factors:
   1) Do you have an interesting result
   2) Is the paper well-written
   3) Referee biases: Is your referee sympathetic?

   With the most important factor being (3).

   1ae3 has it right, the experience is not that much different from the other three journals. The biggest difference is that the editor exerts almost no control, so the referees carry more weight. Also, because the editor is out of it, there may be some more randomness in the referee assignment.

   How does it rank compared to general interest econ journals, say such as EER or Economic Journal? How about top fields in econ, such as Journal of Public Economics and Games?

   I know who you are! The editor is not more "out of it" than at the other 2 top journals.

   I sincerely doubt you know who I am.

   In any case, Bill Schwert hasn't been seen at a research conference in something like ten years. He has no idea whatsoever who the younger generation of good researchers is, and he has completely missed the shift towards caring about identification in empirical work. So, yes, he is a lot more "out of it" than the guys running the JF and the RFS.
