the op is right. He is a disgrace to academia
J.Peterson makes almost a million a year

I don't agree with his view on religion either. But you should realize these days the bigger evil is the lefties that you also disagree on free speech. They are more powerful evil.
I'd say "Time to unite all of us who are against the regressive authoritarian left"
Time to unite.
It's clear what his weakness is. He starts with dogmatic assumptions about human behavior and society and then goes on epic rants. I fully back his stance about free speech on campus, but he's extended his commentary beyond that topic and is venturing into the "I am very smart, I know what it wrong with people" territory. Remember that conversation he had with Sam Harris about religion and he got his ass handed to him.
-
exactly. Again, not that I am disagreeing with some of his viewpoints. At this point he's become like a tribal leader of some sort. Remember when he started criticizing MGTOW ? Totally backtracked on that one. The guy is just prostituting himself at this point.
He makes some fair enough points sometimes but all his followers are just dumb people who think he can better articulate their anti-left thoughts.
-
Agree that the left is enemy number one. Peterson is an eloquent and smart man, but he's over-extended himself. I suspect his popularity will start to die off in the next year as people get sick of him constant bickering about young people. It turns people off when you start telling them how to live their lives. He should stop with the self-help guru bs and actually start doing real academic work.

His analysis isn't rigorous. He starts with assumptions that he cannot defend. His view is that life is very difficult and it has to be difficult in order to have meaning.

You do know he is a psychologist, not an economist, right? What he says perfectly fits in his field of study.

I agree. But there cannot be a rigorous answer to 'What should we do with our lives?'.

look, most of us (in fact I believe most academics, just not the vocal ones) agree with him re his views on what is now termed the regressive left.
that doesn't mean I have to agree with everything he says. he's a little bit one-sided, everything is about the "radical left" (= ideas he does not like). certainly I don't want to be associated with his reddit type fanbase who treat him as their guru.
in any case, whether or not somebody earns millions by selling pop-books should in no way influence whether or not he gets tenured, or his salary. I don't even know why OP would make such a claim.
-
Whether you are left or right, you need to thank him if you are (or will be) in academia.
If you don't, I hope you will be dragged down by campus student activists. Reap what you sow.This. No sane person in academia doesn't understand, or they do and approve of the lunacy. JP is a sadly rare bright spot in a deranged and dying industry.

You think it's silly for a public university like UofT to give him a salary when he spends his time promoting his self-help books? ok...

AP at a large public university actually.

So OP agree that regressive left is terrible, even says the left is enemy number one. And OP says Peterson is an eloquent and smart man. But OP's complaint is Peterson overextended himself.
But OP, then do you really need to focus on his shortcoming not his strength that even you acknowledge? Who else has lesser problem than this? Who else? Can you name?

He failed tenure at harvard.
Hes a lot like taleb. 2nd 3rd rate academic, pop book writer, running a cultdude taleb failed tenure at western state community college.
Not nabbing Harvard and ending up at UT is a little different than becoming the leader of the Taleban.
