Hull leaves for Brown. Tebaldi leaves for Columbia. Last year, Lipnowski left for Columbia. Is Chicago's department still a hostile place for juniors?
Juniors leaving Chicago

There are a few very toxic senior people in the department
If you are able to work without interacting with them much, it is not so bad. And there are many good and supportive senior people as well.
But a little goes a long way. And if you have good outside options, why deal with it?

MM very good. He seeks substance in research. Chicago is the top department of economics and seeks gamechanger brilliant minds.
PH very good. He’s brilliant. But he’s no gamechanger. He’s following the crowd to write popular (and v good) DID papers.
That’s my humble take.

That’s my humble take.If the entire cannon of MM papers disappeared overnight, I can't think of anything that would change in the world, or in anything economists study or do. It's the definition of high volume, low impact work.
