Yeah I didn’t think UA had a Stanford offer. Probably true that he could go almost anywhere except MIT, Harvard, and Stanford (certainly if SS is part of the bargain). But they refuse to take any insufficiently exalted offers...
To be honest, not even SS would get a Stanford or MIT offer. These places see through the fog and shoddy work in her papers.

To fit the bill the junior would have to meet two conditions: extreme academic accomplishment AND old-Chicago-arrogance (toxicity). Few if any new faculty can fit this bill...The first condition is tough on its own. The second one is somewhat easier, and many present faculty have chosen to take it to the extreme to compensate for their lack of the first condition (everyone who they are).
So that's the equilibrium, nice good juniors choose to leave rather than keep suffering certain "colleagues" -
