Insider told me that PH didn't interact with the faculty and was always an outsider. Faculty were not sad to see him go.
Juniors leaving Chicago
-
MM very good. He seeks substance in research. Chicago is the top department of economics and seeks gamechanger brilliant minds.
PH very good. He’s brilliant. But he’s no gamechanger. He’s following the crowd to write popular (and v good) DID papers.
That’s my humble take."Chicago is the top department of economics"
LOL somebody tell this guy the 90s are over

harrible place to be a junior, by far the worst in the top 7. Also, very unequal treatment of juniors, even in terms of pay which is uncommon at the AP level; a few clear "superstars" are revered and thought to be "Chicago material" from day one, others "need to prove themselves" and are treated like dirt. Ugh

On the other hand, they take chances on people that other top 7 won’t. There are analogous shops on Wall St or sports. It’s ok, we can have one boiler room among 7. One place that keeps out people who say “ugh”. You’re free to go elsewhere. Demonstrate the superiority of your system through results. A little less conversation, a little more action. A little more real diversity, a little less death from DIE.

There's no top 7.

Harvard hired YG and BE as a total risk, Berkeley did the same for GZ and PS.

As someone who was on the faculty at Chicago in the early 2000s, let me tell you: that was by far the best academic environment to be a faculty anywhere in the country. That said, it was not for everyone and there have always been a lot of attrition there
As someone who passed through Chicago too, I would vouch that there are aspects of the environment that are terrifically valuable. But it's better to be in one of the centers or professional schools than in the department. You can partake of the workshop culture without being subject to the dysfunction in the department.

Chicago has been on the DEI train since the last three years. Not a serious place anymore.
That is ridiculous. Are you saying this because they have now hired more than zero women? If they were indifferent to that dimension, it was bound to happen eventually.
They are hiring primarily women. JJH is a nobody washed up hasbeen now
