   ​I am very pessimistic about the state of academia, and the future for econ academia. The only good reason I can see for me doing a PhD is the pure love of research... But every week that passes, I care about research less and less.

   I know many of you will be like "haha he failed the PhD markets", but I have 2a/10r/10p. I am turning down my offers and cancelling my pending applications.

   Instead I am going to spend the next few years travelling the world with my girlfriend. I think that will make me happier and more fulfilled, and that a PhD would make me miserable in contrast. I hope you support me in this decision and we can still be friends, EJMR.

    That’s a shame, Karl. Academia needs people like you. Few years of travelling in your late 20s isn’t the best strategy if you want to build a successful career. But I respect your decision if it really does makes you happy and feel fulfilled.
