I'm thoroughly enjoying this. The few intelligent economists on Twitter are learning that they must not feed the econtwitter trolls, and now the trolls are starting to eat each other. We might be finally moving to a better equilibrium.
It's a signaling game. Econtwitter people aren't capable of getting noticed for their thoughtfulness - controversy and outrage is their only option. We are now moving to a separating equilibrium where the intelligent people stay silent, which turns out to be a perfectly valid signaling device for the high types. Obviously the low types don't like it - they want a pooling equilibrium instead, where everybody goes nuts on Twitter and they looks as smart as everybody else.
You can summarize all of this with the adage "Don't play chess with a pigeon"
