I lived in Chicago, and I have my doubts. The city is segregated, and that's sad, but the nice parts of Chicago are basically a safe Midwestern town. KG's colleagues almost certainly live on the North Side where they're not getting mugged.
It's like anywhere else. If you avoid the dangerous parts of town, which are usually just "pockets" of a few blocks, you're fine.
