Was this the Queen's incident or was this something else?
I saw him storm out of a talk about 15 years ago for no good reason. Very childish and maybe already psych issues. But the standard for behavior in econ is/was so law, that it was hard to interpret. Not sure why he moved to Brown.
I heard something big happened up in Canada at Queen's.

HE stopped attending seminars. Probably because colleagues realized how problematic his behavior is.
In general, I believe he has mental health issues. Good he had tenure already.
Interesting. I was the one who posted earlier in the thread about presenting at Brown and him seizing control of the seminar. It was the sort of thing where if he was the one bigshot surrounded by nobodies I would have thought "wow, he is really throwing his bigshotness in everyone's face". But since it was Brown and there were lots of equally successful people in the room it was even less self aware.
I did get cryptic comments from his colleagues I spoke to before and after the seminar warning/commiserating with me without mentioning him by name.
It didn't turn out that badly for me, because he didn't seem to care that much about my paper. But I did kind of feel like I was defusing a live bomb, and that if he got really upset about some identification assumption I made it could get really unpleasant.
I suppose there was a really weird dynamic going on behind the scenes where his colleagues were trying to subtly manage him and he was fairly outwardly trying to manage them. It wouldn't surprise me if it led to him basically being asked to stay quiet in seminars, or at least stay away.

Yes he definitely does. Larry Summers for sure. I am trying to remember the others. There was definitely another that Chay actually said he liked as a person and was nice but thought he was a bad researcher or an idiot or something of that nature, it's on the tip of my tongue.
Have no idea whether they know though.
Was he always like this, or did he suddenly became like this after he stopped doing research?I gave a seminar at Brown a few years ago. His behavior was quite odd. My research is not close to his at all. So there were multiple other people in the room with CVs just as good or better who were a lot more relevant to me given my research. And it was well into his research slow down.
But he still seized control of the seminar and ran it almost like a professor running a grad seminar. Asked the most questions and imposed himself to dictate the pace of both my talk and everyone else's questioning.
Within that super annoying framework, it was relatively ok. He didn't seem particularly impressed with my paper either way, and so he didn't say anything too outrageous. And since he is nowhere near my field, I didn't care that much about impressing him. He was just an annoying filter between me and the people I actually wanted to talk to.
But I have heard worse things from others. Right up to "Brown is the one school I won't visit, entirely because of Chay." To be fair, I haven't heard that for 3-4 years, but I don't know whether that is because things have gotten better or I just haven't had occasion to have those conversations.
Maybe it was this behavior and change in mindset that led him to stop valuing research?
If all he does is rant in class, then won't the undergrads give him low ratings on ratemyprofessor.com?
rants are very entertaining. and his notes are hands down the best material i have ever come across on research design. has a total mastery of causal inference and econometrics theory.

I don't understand this behavior: if he hates his job, he's qualified enough to get another. Why not just go somewhere that you can be happy?The problem with mental illness is that the afflicted will be unhappy everywhere he goes
