progressive men
What kind of man would force his wife to work when she chooses to stay at home for the sake of their child?

Second this. Feminism does not mean you can have it both ways and choose a traditional female role when it suits you.
Feminism means choice. If a woman wants to be a stay at home mom, then she should have this choice and if she chooses to have a career outside the house, she should have this option.
Women should be aware that being a stay at home mom means that she is giving up her financial Independence, which is not advisable.

Got it.
Yep, that's feminism.

Do I also have the choice to become a stay-at-home dad? What if we both were to chose this? Flip a coin?

There are some controlling men, who want their wives home,--generally, they are insecure, weak men. It's called a "traditional" marriage and if a woman wants one of those, she has a right to find and breed with one of those men. She and the kids will need to live with the consequences though.

Sure you have this choice, but I still don't recommend it. There are women who can afford to be the sole-bread winner and there has been an increase in stay-at-home dads.
If both want to be stay at home parents, then you will need to work this out with your spouse. You will need to base it on who earns more and have the better career longevity and which one's career is more recession proof.

Wow, it would be hard to think of an answer more orthogonal to my comment.
It sounds like you have one story playing in your mind and it is your response to all situations.

You haven't spoken with a people living in traditional marriages, have you? Think Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar of "19 Kids and Counting."
BTW, the largest group living in poverty are single moms. Don't become part of this stat.

LOL. Another orthogonal comment that comes from the disjointed thoughts chasing each other around inside your noggin.
Most of the people I know are in what you would probably call "traditional" marriages. They aren't cartoons.
I am very unlikely to become an impoverished single mother for any number of reasons.

So, someone just learned how to say the word orthogonal. Well, good for you for trying to expand your vocabulary.
If you want, you can be a single dad living in poverty. Don't say I didn't warn you. Oh wait a minute, you would need to get married and have kids and we all know that that is not going to happen with that personality.

Oh, is orthogonal a big word? My bad. I keep forgetting that I am the only economist on this site.
Unrelated-to-past comments? Is that better?
I would also have a hard time being a single dad in poverty for multiple reasons. It would be easier for me than being a single mom though.

If you are an economist, you must be Southern or are evangelical based on your lack of intellectual ability.
I implied that the word orthogonal is a new word for you. If you consider that to be a big word, well good for you.
Don't give up on your sex change. If you want to be a single mom, I say go for it. May your dreams of being a single mother living in poverty come true.
Is this reasonable? Would you support this?Depends. Does your wife have an MBA and earn 300 thousand a year? Is your wife an MD or a lawyer and earn 300 thousand a year? Is your wife a PhD economist and earn 200 thousand a year? Then it's much cheaper to have your kid in day care for 20-30 thousand a year.
If your wife earns less than 30 thousand a year, then her staying home may make sense.
It depends on whether you think your kid would benefit from having a $300,000/year mother. The benefit is bigger, as well as the opportunity cost. Actually, if she's that valuable monetarily, she can probably make $200,000 working from home talking to her cellphone while rocking the baby with one hand and stirring the porridge with other.
To everyone fretting about costs: read Caplan's Selfish Reasons to Have More Kids. Raising kids does not have to be an expensive endeavor. Give them hand me downs, make them work, ask for help from your parents and other parent-friends. Just chillax and enjoy life.
