   So somebody posted a thread about disproportionate crime among certain groups recently, and it was locked shortly thereafter, despite that the discussion within the thread was very tame (the title was troll bait, but no trolls showed up).
   On the one hand there wasn't really anything interesting going on in the thread and I don't think it was likely to go anywhere interesting, but on the other hand this seems like a pretty broad definition of racist, since in principle we should be allowed to talk about that kind of thing. Even staunch antiracists acknowledge that crime rates are a problem. Even if we think they're not a problem, shouldn't people be allowed to talk about it in order to ultimately arrive at that conclusion?
   I'm all for banning slurs, but I don't think you should police substantive content, and I'm really irritated now.

   I was poster 07dc in that thread, i.e. the least trollish and highest voted (lol, for now) poster. The thread was clearly not going anywhere. We have lost nothing by its closure.

   I teach a lot of white students who come from very sheltered backgrounds, and a lot of them have all sorts of crazy ideas from parents who read the Bell Curve or whatever. Most of the ideas, like what OP of that thread was alluding to, are such transparent nonsense that a sentence or two of additional facts offered without condescension are enough to get them thinking differently. The initial conversation never goes anywhere, though.

   Also I think only mods can close threads, so it was presumably a judgment call made by somebody who saw that it wasn't going anywhere good and had potential to go bad places.
