Leeper has the habit of bad mouthing juniors behind their back which is unacceptable.
No problem, he'll fit right in with Hamermesh
I think the bigger problem with Leeper for UT is that he's kind of narrow. If you want to hire a senior economist to rebuild your macro department, you want someone with broad interests to guide graduate students and assistant professors with diverse interests toward successful research projects. This requires having worked in many areas. You don't want someone who's going to steer all junior people (like Todd Walker) and grad students into one area of research.
Leeper has worked mainly on monetary policy and the fiscal theory of the price level. He's done very nice work in these areas, but this, for a senior macroeconomist, is still fairly limited in scope. He's likely to crank out graduate students working only in these areas, but there will be limited interest from other schools in hiring fiscal theory of the price level junior people.
For what it's worth, conditional on spending a fortune on someone, I think they'd be much better off hiring younger but broader-minded people like a Giorgio Primiceri or a Yuriy Gorodnichenko than an Eric Leeper and one of his junior coauthors. (I'm not saying these guys would go, I have no idea, I'm just offering examples of young guys who've already worked in more areas (and with more success) than a Leeper).
Everyone knows Yuriy Gorodnichenko would be a great choice. Question is: why whould he move to shitty place like Austin when he has a large chance to get tenure at Berkeley.
Why did Jaimovic go to Duke or Reis to Columbia?
You take a young guy, you throw a ton of money at him, make him full, give him free rein to guide macro recruiting in the next few years, solve a two-body body problem, have them hire their coauthors and friends, basically promise to give them all the resources they need to create their ideal environment. For someone in UC with family where pay is relatively low and real estate prices high, there's room for this kind of move. But the point wasn't about Yuriy specifically, but young guns like him more generally. There's a number of them who would be fair game and would seem more fitting given UT's long-run objectives. They need to think outside the box a little more than they seem to be doing.
Grossly underplaced? Don't think so. Rumors in the profession say he has a "special" personality indeed.Leeper is grossly underplaced at IU and has been very productive these last few years. He can be problematic as a person, though, and this is what has kept good places from hiring him. It would be good for austin if they really are trying to hire him and personalities like Leeper would not be out of place there.
Wow, is this really true? I am surprised. I don't know Leeper very well. But I did not notice any special things in his personality.

I don't think so. If you believe this crap you have no idea how very few heavy weights there are in the profession.. There is a handful of current nobel prize winners who carry *some* weight (and even that is quite small) with the nobel committee.. and even that aint too big. Leeper influencing the Nobel committee?! please!!
Some other rumors say that his perseveration with Riskbanks directed the last two Nobel prizes in certain directions.
Ha! I just looked up the word "perseveration" because I had never seen it before.
perseveration:
the pathological, persistent repetition of a word, gesture, or act, often associated with brain damage or schizophrenia.
Are you saying that Leeper would meander through the Riksbank chanting "Sargent! Sims! Sargent! Sims! Sargent! Sims!???" I cannot get that image out of my mind, lol.
correct! only if you look at what he is doing since graduation: FTPLHa! I just looked up the word "perseveration" because I had never seen it before.

I think you have no idea about the process and how things work in a central bank.I don't think so. If you believe this crap you have no idea how very few heavy weights there are in the profession.. I see. I didn't know that it is the folks at the Riksbank research department who give out the award.. I hear that some of those on the committee are actually undergrads.. Everything makes sense now.
ps. if you care to learn, the award process has NOTHING to do the Riksbank except that they provide the fund for the award. The committee members are chosen from the members of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. And the couldn't give shit about what people at Leeper's level think (This is not to bash Leeper.. but nobody at that level has any influence, except that some of them are asked to write a report in their own field. Even those have very limited influence. The academy does its own research and the process takes years.
