The question is whether Frank Ramsey would consider himself an economist? Would Von Neumann? Or David Hume? Or just something they also dabbled in. Their contribution to philosophy and science is so much that their considerable contributions to economy or political economy are a minuscule part of their total contributions.

Most people here have not heard about him (economic systems is no longer part of graduate curriculum anywhere now), but if one has to include a "thinker" about an economic system (one which admittedly ultimately failed much after his passing) I would include the name of Yevgeni Preobrazhensky.

Add Shapley to that list of major contributors to economics who may not have thought of themselves as economists. Also maybe Aumann. Blackwell has had results extremely important to economics as well, though I’d say he’s more of a statistician. Even Nash might belong here.
