Must be a reference to Stephen Karolyi. He and his coauthor, Andrew Bird, committed academic fraud in 2 papers published in top 3 journals.
tl;dr. They were using a bulls**t methodology in those 2 papers. After the papers were accepted, they changed the descriptions of the methodology to make it seem legit. But they never reran any of the results, so none of the tables changed. They got busted by someone who saw them present an older version and noticed that the tables didn't change between the versions, but the descriptions of the methods changed.
There's a 100+ page thread about it (https://www.econjobrumors.com/topic/will-the-real-specification-please-stand-up-discredits-accounting-paper/) on EJMR.
If you're a prospective grad student, don't go to CMU. You don't want to be associated with scum like Karolyi and Bird.
I would hesitate to attend a school that continues to employee two known fraudsters. The fraud is egregious and the school has not suspended the faculty. Instead, CMU continues to list their retracted work on the university website. Any respectable school would immediately suspend them (with pay) and seek to terminate their contracts for cause. This is not just an accusation of fraud but a finalized and documented case of academic fraud. Given how CMU has failed to handle or address this issue, we will not be interviewing any of their graduates in the near future.
