As a Chinese who has lived and worked in the US for more than 10 years, I will not be surprised to see younger generation heading back to China in waves in the next couple of years.
We are living in a world where both US and China are racing to the bottom. It is true that in China people cannot badmouth leaders. But guess what, at least you are not stabbed on the street, pushed off the subway, and your kids won't be labeled virus and discriminated for "working hard".

The fundamentals of both countries have not changed. I don't see a significant change at the margin of people's willingness to move. But China's crackdown on VISAs could have some impact - it's increasingly more difficult to travel abroad nowadays, except on F-1.

Rich Shanghainese send their children to international school such as SAS, then to american universities. Almost all of them return to China immediately after graduation. In recent years only people from average families have chosen to stay and work in the US. They are attracted by the high pay and the wlb culture, and nothing else. Why not Switzerland? Well, It's just that Switzerland doesn't welcome immigrants.
The young generations really loves the CCP, unlike the olders. Just talk to any Chinese undergrad in the US and you'll know it.

I can certainly relate to the first point. All politics aside, life is extremely monotone and boring for Chinese men in the US. Can't remember the last time I flirted with another girl. Only thing keeping me here is a high paying and relaxing job.

Dear Chinese bros: I was actually wondering whether with the tendecy towards isolationism, Western trained economics might be on the decline in the P.R.C.? After all, this striving for pubs in Western econ journals, isn't it just a status seeking game? I guess this will not be so much in demand any more in the future, and rather some apologetic 'pseudo' economic science might be advocated for. Luckily, in contrast to Russia, P.R.C. is still a 'communist' country, so there s something to draw on.
