    I totally agree. I also use mathematics in my courses in order to drive the undergrads into submission. It's very easy to get pet-undergrads if that's the only way they can pass your exam!

    We should also resist the siren song of statistics. It purports to embrace ambiguity, ignorance, and other forms of not-knowing. But in fact it shoehorns them within a strict technical framework, repackaging uncertainties as forms of knowing that obey particular mathematical axioms.
