Matray tenured at Princeton

Truly deserved. Thesmar and Sraer are not on any of his papers. That's impressive for a french dude for real.
They lobbied for him quite aggressively though.
Thesmar lobbies aggressively for many of his students (and their partners). He's becoming ridiculous.

I'm at an MRM department (think OSU/ND/BC/Rice/Cornell/USC). We had AM out for a seminar in the past year or two, and we had a discussion about whether to give him an offer with tenure. Almost unanimously, the decision was a hard no.
He just doesn't come across as a very deep thinker. Sure, he has great registry data from France, and he finds a cute little random experiment to run. But there are no deep ideas, no big impact.
In the end, we would rather go with one of our own juniors instead, tbh.
Matray is an excellent researcher and deserves tenure at a top finance department.

Lol at you. Rice has better researchers and better PhD placements than many of the schools listed. They place people at Cornell, UBC, BC, Michigan. The last good placement from BC was EG at Wharton 10 years ago.
ND and Rice MRM? Lol. Most probably insider from Cornell

Cornell placement cut at mid review
UBC placement after two-year postdoc
Michigan placement everyone knows
BC placement asking around to move down already -
And other solid placements like SMU etc.
Just saying, that’s still way better than most of these other schools, with the exception OSU that has had a strong run.
