   Tenure is almost guaranteed at this point, or even more people will leave and it will be even harder to attract new faculty, right? For certain juniors that’s attractive

   Tenure is never guaranteed. It is especially not guaranteed in a top 15 research school. Getting votes from your department is a necessary but insufficient condition. You need the Dean to approve as well. Given the quality of other departments at Ross and the newfound reputation of the finance department, this will be hard.

   Finance Professors can leave academia at any time and make 10 million a year as investment bankers and hedge fund managers. Academia needs to up salaries massively to be competitive.

    If he agreed then they would fight to keep the people who are leaving. Ross and Michigan U are probably headed for mediocrity. It's a state school in a depressed region. Michigan just repealed its right-to-work law. The tea leaves indicate Michigan (not just the university) is in decline. Imagine the U.S. in 20 years. Do you see Michigan being a hotbed of any interesting economic or cultural growth?

    Remember when Wash U. in St. Louis threw a lot of money after big names to develop their economics department? That didn't go so well.

    And I don't think they have a lot of $$$. Their MBA program is shrinking.

    Finance departments are very expensive for business schools because finance market salaries are among the highest among business disciplines. Maintaining a strong finance department is simply not a priority for Ross. Their money is better invested in areas that provide much stronger synergy with the rest of campus, such as Operations, because UM has a very strong compsci and engineering cluster. Why spend money on so much money to attract strong finance researchers when you can use the same money to attract twice as many strong operations/IT scholars, who can also lever the strong expertise and reputation of those topics in the rest of the university?
