   I just got into MIT Econ Phd (yes I am taking it over Harvard), and also the quant group of Goldman Sachs (GSAM QIS). I value professorship at a top place more than private sector money, but seeing this forum makes me worried about my exit opps for the Phd program. What if I don't find a good faculty position? Am I going to be employable just as if I had chosen Goldman five years ago?

   Also, I wonder if the salary of a quant, or an economist in IMF/WB, will be enough to buy a nice apartment in NYC?

   Sounds like you have a high opportunity cost.

   I went through the Ph.D. program myself because I asked myself this question: "In 10 years, will you be happier as an Econ Ph.D. or as something else."

   I have just completed the job market process and have found a job I am happy with, so I feel I made a good decision.

   Goldman hands down, you will work with 100+ PhDs in Econ/Finance, lots of top data and tools.

   At MIT, you will have a handful of smelly other grad students, who are probably from Asia and have no clue about Econ/Finance.

   If you are under 30, then definitely Goldman for min 2 years. Look you are prolly going to live to 85-90. Plan accordingly. And its not like working at GS hurts you with the MIT admissions committee.

    Definitely MIT if you have good mathematical analysis ability (baby Rudin level)
    At MIT people are extremely friendly though the course burden is quite high

    That is bs. Adcoms are worried about people with too much industry expertise, for they suspect the latter might have a natural inclination to go back eventually. I know the story could go the other way around as well, but what can you do...
