I was in a math class with Hesterberg at Princeton- actually taught by Elias Stein.
Guy was really awkward, obviously home schooled, and wore a lanyard + math competition clothing every day
Surprised he's dated any women. Grooming is the only strategy that would work realistically.
Technically there do seem to be a few points worthy of worry, like the chest touching part, the jeans falling down part, and the "microagression" (if one would call it that) of bu/t/t and fon/dle being sent on purpose in the crossword puzzle. There's also a power play worry because the guy *did* try to use his mentoring position to date younger people, minors who depended on him.
But this is only one side of the story. It's only based on what one person said. We need to hear what the guy said, what the camp authorities (who decided it wasn't se/x/ual harrassment) said, and what other campers who witnessed it said. I don't know if it was a right thing to cancel the guy and destroy his reputation in a mailing list of 1000 people. But if the self-claimed victim didn't do that, then they might have been left with no other recourse.
Very gross and shameful response on the part of MIT... but can I go off topic a little? Why would anyone send their kid to MATH camp? Math can be done anywhere and you just need paper and calculators. Not like band camp or space camp. Cheaper to hire a private tutor over the summer or enroll in ArtOfProblemSolving online courses or Russian Math School, no? If I recall some of the Math counts winners were even homeschooled. Math camp sounds like a r*tard's r*tard*d imitation of tiger parenting.
