Paul Samuelson stated at one point that Tom Schelling was the smartest person he ever met. Same age as Arrow. Given that PAS stupidly turned down Arrow for entry into grad school to MIT, he may be embarrassed about that, and, well, von Neumannn humiliated him, while Schelling is more humble. But Arrow and Schelling together still outweigh pretty much any other living economists, even though they are both 94.
