Non-academic women tend to admire teachers more than researchers. They think of male teachers as Chadlite extraverts while "researcher" conjures up an image of an overly introverted, g33ky inc31. You should be happy she views you as more of the teacher professor type.

No one cares what you do. Nobody outside of academia reads academic journals. Few people, students at university, know what research really is, and there is a high chance >90% of your students don't even know the title of a single paper of you and would not know the difference between Journal of Finance and Journal of Financial Markets.
The truth is, academia is the largest bubble of insiders. No one outside of it cares about it. Company executives or bankers, traders don't read academic journals, ever. They may read practitioner's journals occasionally. Unless you find something groundbreaking, your research has 0 value to humanity, which is why no one cares about it. Your teaching surely has more of an impact on society.
If you wanted to gain some recognition, going into a random company where even the lowest ranked employee has the title "(insert here) Manager" would have given you more recognition and others more of an understanding what you actually do. Hiring Manager, Finance Manager, Supply Chain Manager/Officer whatever. Academia is great, but people think only of the stuff that matters, and if you are on EJMR, your research likely does not.

I agreed with the above poster, and am not an undergrad. The marginal value of our research is asymptotically 0. The marginal value of our teaching is not - we shape how future minds see the world. Research may be fun, but at the end of the day, even in the best of cases, a few ideas trickle out into society, and those are what have value.
Truly no one cares about the research except the strange cabal of Insiders. We have created a mutual admiration Society the outside world could not care less about, and then people flip out the Florida is going to review professors every 5 years to see whether they have become Deadwood after they got tenure.
