He passed the GRE threshold, but so did a lot of people. He had two excellent letters and one very good letter. His math background is strong, but the issue is his grades in the core math classes aren’t that great.
My department is willing to overlook that because “his upper level math grades are excellent so it could’ve just been a learning curve.”
Not only that, his undergrad school is a borderline community college.
In 6 years I’m going to say a big “I told you so” when he’s a terrible candidate
