The whole point is that they won't need to defend their country by themselves. Are you dense?

LOL. This guy is ready to sacrifice 100s of thousands of *other* people's lives to defend a defenseless state.
The sad thing is that the Borises think they are right. Guys, it really boils down to this:
1) There was a commonly agreed state of affairs where the borders of countries in Europe had been pretty much stable for the past 30 years
2) Those independent countries decided they wanted to join the EU, NATO, or both (doesn't matter if we they were lured with nice promises, because Russia could have done the same and it did not)
3) Russia gets a bit miffed that such countries openly like the West and shun Russia
4) Russia decides to move borders with tanks
5) People don't like borders moved with tanks (among civilized countries it's the diplomatic equivalent of eating with your feet)
6) Civilized countries turn their backs on Russia
7) Russia cries "foul!", to no avail because no one is required to play along with bad people

I think you forgot to mention the coup sponsored by the US that overthrew a democratically elected government and replaced with a government picked by the US.

I did not. It is right up there, under point 2.
The West used its soft power to provoke a coup? So what? Russia could have used its soft power to prevent it or promote a counter coup. It did not since Russia has no soft power whatsoever, in part because people still remember the brutal agression imposed on them by the USSR.
Russians are like those kids who suck at sports and try to change the rules of the game so they can win. They then proceed to put on a surprised face when the other kids walk away.
