New "Family Ruptures" AER / NBER is rip-off of obscure paper
-
MRS and PP have gone from strength to strength.. hit more top 5s, got access to more crazy good data. on the other hand, almost the entire econ establishment got together to attack and bring down the forum responsible for breaking the scandal, from opening alternative outlets to devoting space to 'high quality research' to take down a random online forum. not sure what #neverforget will/has accomplished!

I think the lasting impact is a transparent picture of how things actually work in the profession. What has always been most compelling to me about Ruptures is just how hard everyone worked to ensure it was published in the AER even after it was clear that the paper’s contribution was pretty marginal. I have no problem believing the earlier articles were overlooked, but that fact certainly gave the AER plenty of recourse for pulling the paper, shifting it to one of the AEJs, etc. The machinations everyone went through to avoid those alternatives is pretty revealing.

Don't underestimate how many relevant people are disgusted by this even if they're not very outspoken about it. I know from many private conversations.
I do find it totally ok that if they write other papers that are actually good, they should be published wherever they deserve to be. But I'm pretty sure that whatever PP does, she won't get tenure at Stanford nor another top department. Look at what happened to Oster (which was way less embarrassing), nobody wanted to get burned...

When it comes to tenure decisions, those who know don't talk, and those who talk don't know.
