Dr Franz-Kuche makes an interesting point but I am surprised that nobody here mentioned the real truth as to why economics creates a toxic environment for women: Mathematics is, in fact, a tool of oppression.
It denies the centrality of emotion to reason, strips away subjectivities and context, and privileges the hetero-normative account wherein logic triumphs over feeling. It allows us to reduce the human experience into cold numbers and symbols; makes space for the manipulation of ideas through cold, unthinking procedures that pay no heed to social meanings; and reduces the lived experience into a crude, calculating machine. It is the handmaiden of gender oppression and reactionary conservatism.
It is Patriarchal Imperialism writ large.

^Actually I will not penalize the young lady at all, and I believe no one should. She is young, smart for her age, and obviously wants to get ahead in life - which is also ok for her age. Her wants are within normal bounds.
Well said. The real story here is that the well-established mentors promoting this paper as pathbreaking evidence of sexism in our profession should know better. Some may have hidden motives for discrediting the open discussions on site regarding corruption in the profession. Intelligent people will easily see through this. But a flawed undergrad dissertaton is in itself inconsequential, so why give the author more attention (positive or negative) than they would deserve in any other context?
The best response is to afford her the same respect and support we try to give to all students, providing critique that is honest yet constructive and encouraging. If her mentors are being disingenuous and using her to push their own private agendas, chopping her down only feeds into their narrative.
I think we all kinda know there is a sexism problem here. However, the paper probably overstates the issue.
A bunch of guys (ejmr is, mostly) are not going to sit around talking about dick and balls when the topic of sex comes up. I hope the author doesn't think that men shouldn't discuss sex on the internet.

just because JW doesn't get into the NYT without writing about research doesn't mean that a Master's thesis should be treated like a research paper. I've seen the Master's thesis from hell dozens of time and it never even remotely looked like a flawed research paper - it just looked like the Master's thesis from hell.
AW wrote a Master's thesis that was sufficiently close to flawed research [almost all research is somewhat flawed, congrats, seriously], to give JW a chance to finally publish how he feels about EJMR in the NYT ["a pathbreaking study"...]. Of course, you don't need to let a computer count words to recognize EJMR for what it is... but then again: in a Master's thesis it's perfectly legitimate to test whether a somewhat dubious ML method is able to figure out the obvious... And I won't blame her if EJMR bothers her a bit... [and in that respect, I do believe that EJMR is symptomatic of the profession: there's a lot to be bothered about]
[What I really would have found interesting would have been some hard facts about how/whether "toxicity" (or anything else) on EJMR is related to the yearly job market cycle...]
