To some extent, I think Singaporeans also have a massive superiority complex from being the only advanced industrialized country in Southeast Asia, yet, as a civilization, they haven't achieved even a fraction of the same intellectual and cultural achievements as the Japanese.
I doubt the Japanese have a fetish for Oxbridge the same way Singaporeans do.
If NUS were any good, Singaporeans wouldn't be flooding the gates at rejects schools in England such as UCL despite having offers to NUS.
I speak from experience. Many of my friends have chosen to pay a substantial premium to get a UCL/Warwick/Manchester/Exeter/Leeds degree than to stay at NUS.
I myself went to Michigan over NUS.

The saddest part about this is NUS students tend think the reason why Singaporeans study overseas is because they couldn't get offers at NUS.
