MA said no already?
NU Macro Senior

I just do not see it. Visiting, sure. One year in Chicago, hanging out with GL and some other friends makes sense. But leaving MIT for NU does not make sense to me. There are only 2-3 places that can compete with MIT, and NU is not one if them (even if it is a great place!)

Just in the last years, they have declined offers from EN, JS, AA, GCR, FG, EO, VM (?), MA. Not sure what the problem is, especially in such a collegial department with good location. Are they underpaying relative to the market? I doubt it. Overshooting in terms of quality? Probably.
As someone who knows the relevant info, I have to say that this post from a few months ago is a weird mix of knowledge and nonsense.
First, it is nonsense: there have never been offers to AA, EO, or VM, and as we recently saw, the offer to MA was accepted rather than declined. The offers to EN and JS were a number of years ago (at the same time they moved to Berkeley, was it 2018?), and FG was a few years before that. The only macro offer recently made by Northwestern other than the successful offer to MA was GCR, also this year. That process was essentially a bet on the low-probability but high-return scenario in which he didn't get tenure at Harvard, and everyone understood it was unlikely once he did get tenure.
On the other hand, there is some knowledge here: many of the offers did happen, and the made-up offers (AA, EO, and VM) are certainly the kinds of people that Northwestern macro might be interested in. But not a reliable source, given that these offers didn't actually happen and that MA actually accepted.
