   yeah, especially since 'good' is defined by a small group of people who will let you know what is considered good after they published their usual uninspiring papers on that area/topic.

   I apologize for no gooding you in error. You are spot on. That's where the discrimination lies. A tiny group of men decide what is interesting and what is relevant. Most times the subjects are not useful to the big questions we face. Minorities can do great economics if they can get to focus on their problems and how they see the world, not what a handful of men decide.

   HU tweets are not a surprise to UChicago students. Over the years he has made far too many comments that are borderline racists. A few years ago he tried to schedule class on MLK day and he looked around at the students sitting in the classroom, he pointed to the only black student in the class and he said to him "you are probably offended by it." There are also numerous examples of him making comments about Asian students and how they have to speak better english.
   Of course, UChicago won't say a word about his remarks!

   Not that I am a huge fan of Balasz Szentes, but ask him what he did to Uhlig...

   He is literally not an economist.

   As some people know, I am not a fan of Harald Uhlig. We have had many disagreements, some quite bitter, about his performance as a journal editor. I also disagree strongly with his tweets. However, I am also a strong supporter of freedom of speech, both academic and non-academic. He got an earful last week for his tweet. The only reason I did not give him crap is that I would just be piling on.
   While I may not like his editorial practices, I have never heard anything indicating any racial prejudice on his part. Endorsing Trump would be far more offensive since that would put a stamp of approval on so many offensive statements, many far more offensive than anything Uhlig has said. Would people argue that he should lose his positions if he endorsed Trump? If his tweets did result in some loss of professional status, how does that improve things in any substantive way? It would not change any attitudes nor anything in economics. It would just cause others to say nothing.
   My attitude is let people say stupid things, use your freedom of speech to slap them down when they do, but then get on with the business of real reform.

   Endorsing Trump does not mean endorsing everything he says, any more than endorsing Biden would mean endorsing everything he says (including his many deceptions). Thanks for your comment Ken but this is a bad example.

   If I had said that about endorsing any other President, I would agree. I will agree that even Nixon did some good things -- environmental regulations, school desegregation, his China policy, and detente, for example.

   But we are talking about Trump. What good has he done? Many economists like his tax cut but I have always argued that we need to worry about the long-run debt. Like many economists, I think that there is no tax cut if there is no spending cut.

   Someone challenged me to consider the recent Title IX changes. I do not know the details of those changed (if you don't know the details, you know nothing) but I have never liked the "guilty-if-accused" attitude of some universities. I have had to sit through many courses on sexual harassment (as required by CA law) and have been appalled by the imprecise descriptions of laws and regulations. At one point, I argued that displaying a French postcard (an item which is not regarded as pornography) in his office was an expression of free speech, not an instance of sexual harassment. A Stanford lawyer emphatically shot back "There is no freedom of speech at Stanford."

   Trump's record is so full of lies and insults that I don't see how anyone can endorse Trump without endorsing at least some of those lies and insults, many of which are far worse than anything Uhlig said.

   Ken, I admire you greatly for posting here. Thank you! 90% of us are in no position to express, well, much of anything at all publicly these days.

   Let's all focus on the principle that's really under threat---free thought and free expression---rather than the particulars of what anyone said.

   When you attack someone, carefully pick your points. One comment has been that Uhlig told Asian students they need to be better at speaking English. We are not told the manner in which he expressed that recommendation, however I have often made the same comment to Asian students of mine. I tend to do it in private, but I can be emphatic in making that point. I had an Israeli student who needed that advice. If a grad student wants to succeed in the international economics community, he needs to do a good job at speaking and writing English. If a student just wants to get a degree and go home, then they may not need to know English well. But when I interact with a student at UC, at Stanford, or at any other place, I presume that they want to be part of the international economics community.

   Encouraging them to know English is the same as encouraging them to learn the math they need to do good work. Language is part of a culture, but asking grad students in American schools to learn English is not an example of cultural imperialism. English is the language of international economics, just as Latin used to be the language of everything, French the language of diplomacy, German the dominant language of physics, etc. Having a common language is essential to efficient communication of ideas, and historical events, some good some bad, have made English the natural choice for that role.

   Perhaps Harald did not make the point in the most polite manner, but he was right about the need to know English.

    Scientist here. Just wanted to chime in that nobody cares about the quality of a scientist's English. Like 0.00% of scientists. If you can follow what the person is saying, it's fine. (And frankly I have been to plenty of talks in which I cannot follow the presenter's English. In those cases, I read the slides.)

    Economist here. Economists definitely care about the quality of other economists' English bc we communicate with each other in that language.

    It is annoying if I can't understand someone's spoken English, but I may try to read the paper. If I can't read the paper, forget it.
