    The difference is that now we have far more tools for fighting crime (DNA, CCTV everywhere, everyone carries cell phones, etc.) Alarmingly, the clearance rate has plummeted over the last six decades. Now cops are solving only half of mürders, instead of 90% in the 1960s. Also, homicides surged 30% in 2020, highest increase in the last 100 years outside the 9/11 attacks.

    Crime looks lower than during the 80s because many crimes now are simply not reported due to the bail laws. Why bother reporting a crime if the perpretrator will be back on the street within a couple of hours?
