i have a feeling that most zoom/ Miami interviews go to the same people
So your hypothesis is that talent is not uniformly spread across all job market candidates.
After participating in the job market for over 20 years you see a clear pattern. Each year there are about 15 really good JMCs. Unfortunately, you can only identify about 7 or 8 of them, so many schools focus on these candidates. There are also another 15 or 20 each year that look good on paper. Then you talk to them and they seem clueless about their own papers. You are fraud! I detest what you say! There are at least 15 jmcs with top 3 pubs. None of them from 'top' schools. Did you find out who is a glorious RA between those 15? Did you interview the "top" superlemons? Who did you interview that didnt know his own paper? stfu, stfu, stfu or give us names and schools they are coming from.
You do not sound rational. I agree there are 15 JMCs with top 3 pubs and there are usually 15 JMCs from top schools each year as well. This has nothing to do with the statement that each there are roughly 15 JMCs that will ultimately be successful nor that many have limited ability to describe their current research. Most of the candidates from the top schools will not ultimately succeed nor will the ones from mid tier or bottom tier schools. My impression is that 20% of the candidates from top schools in any give year will be successful, 10% from the mid tier schools, and at most 5% from the low tier schools. I think of a successful as someone with at least 5 or 6 top 3 articles in their career.

Why would anyone go to Miami? The virtual first-round interviews are better than the Miami ones, without the cost of getting on a plane in a pandemic or meeting in a hallway filled with little cubicles made from cloth. It seems like the conference mostly has teaching schools with a few research schools but lots of candidates. At Miami, it is difficult to have over two people conduct the interview, while zoom allows easily for 4 or 5. Is this like an intelligence test that schools are failing? What a great idea to have an in-person job market conference with over 250 people in attendance in the middle of Miami, not the most enlightened part of the country, when a new variant has arrived

I've been planning to start a PhD program next year but after reading this thread I changed my mind. I don't know how you live with yourselves and look in the mirror every morning. You should all be ashamed for breeding this Sodom and Gomorrah.
You’re missing out. Enjoy busy season.

I am sorry that this thread is the most toxic over the last several year. Good luck to schools hiring this year. There are still many good people in this profession, though even more arrogant big egos.

It's always been this way. A handful of egos, a handful of bitter jealous petty people, and a larger chunk of generally nice people. The only thing that's changed is the emergence of an anonymous blog where one feels the opportunity to vomit what would normally not be said--hiding like cowards under anonymity.

It's always been full of superlemons and their connections which is why some of them publish. If you consider all 12 journals for tenure this problem would be solved within a year.

You’re missing out. Enjoy busy season.
This person probably doesn't even know what busy season is. Most accounting PhD applicants are econ majors who heard that accounting pays better. They have no CPA or work experience and they wonder why no one wants to hire them. They don't realize that most schools expect you to be able to teach accounting courses.

Not just econ, also some finance masters...and nowadays they can say they can teach data analytics

I always thought busy season was that time you’re staring at the huge stack of exams to grade.
