Schools can prefer just about anything they want, but better teaching and research (evidence of independent research ability in particular, not just a publication with your advisor) are most important. Work experience in accounting helps people with teaching. If you need to be told that, or are this indignant, it’s really hopeless…

Demand side here. While it might be a good signal that you have a top 3 R&R or pub, this doesn't mean that you are entitled to anything. If the paper is boring/phacked/nonsense (yes there is plenty of worthless stuff published in the top journals) and is with well-known and well-connected people, then it is close to irrelevant for hiring. Take JC at Boston University as an example. He had a JAE in his first year of the PhD, but only RAed in the later publication rounds of the paper. Before he even got involved the paper was presented at the JAE conference where it was ripped to shreds. JC's advisor YY booted one of the original coauthors off the paper and put on JC and another one of his RAs to do some reg monkeying. Do I care about that JC has a JAE?! Not at all. I am sure some of the mentioned schools considered that when they made their hiring decisions. Long story short, a top pub needs to be understood in its context. If you have a top pub alone or with another junior (not from your dissertation/JMP) and you come from an MRM/LRM then this is an impressive feat that deserves attention. As far as I know there were not many candidates last year or this year that had that so other stuff will be more relevant.

This is not calling someone out and it is certainly not pathetic. Instead, it is based on easily verifiable facts (see JAE conference papers 2017 and the fact that JC started his PhD in 2018). I am sure the faculty at Boston University agrees with you on character and research or otherwise they would not have hired him.

I maintain that his case is a good example to make this point as it addresses OPs criticism of last year's market, his reference to 7 candidates with top pubs, where JC is one of them as there were not that many candidates with such pubs last year, and, most importantly, since it doesn't concern a candidate who is currently on the market. I am sure that some current candidates with top 3 pubs have similar stories but it would be unprofessional to flaunt them during the market.

The point remains: emphasizing top pubs without context is pointless and a poor way to screen candidates.

Not necessarily and, even if they do, context matters. For example:

- Coauthor with your advisor on something related to your JMP and not as related to their existing work? Good sign (signal that the student was likely more than just the RA on the paper). These are the top 3/4/5/6 pubs that carry strong signaling value on the market.

- Coauthor with your advisor on something unrelated to your JMP and closely aligned with their other work? Strong signal you were just the RA. These are the top 3/4/5/6 pubs that carry very little signaling value at any serious research school.

Many JMCs, including several of those going crazy in this thread, can't or won't differentiate the two.

Deep down every senior faculty realizes the role that randomness/nonmerit plays in getting a top pub… which is why 1-2 top pubs won’t convert to a top 5 job offer.

My advice, the job market paper is much more important than top pub on CV. You will have to present, defend, and explain your job paper to live audiences.

A bad job paper / presentation will devalue any top pub on your CV.

Because most humans are experiential learners, they will remember the seminar and office visits but not your CV.

Not quite. A pub/rr indicates the ability of the PhD student to publish, which is a good signal. I agree it's not the only signal, but definitely weigh in the hiring process.

Posts keep deleted. The question was about this sentence:

"Take JC at Boston University as an example. He had a JAE in his first year of the PhD, but only RAed in the later publication rounds of the paper. Before he even got involved the paper was presented at the JAE conference where it was ripped to shreds."

What about the rest? Did all 6 other jmcs made any contribution to the paper or they were all RAs?
