   GMU is a crazy place. They don’t want their best candidates, because current faculty members donot want to lose their power to strong candidates with good research records. They always try to hire someone who is expected to fail tenure.

   I'm slowly realizing that I'm at a place like this - as more papers hit and the seniors realize that I'll soon have a better research record than them, I'm getting frozen out more. Wish I hadn't taken so long to realize this, but I guess it's time to try the seasoned market...

   He is an economist. Aren't we talking about "accounting" professors? BTW - do accounting professors generate any "theories"? I agree that we need economists for theories. But, come on, did any ACCOUNTING professors win Nobel Prize? Daaaah

   Agree. For STEM majors, professors can do well without work experience. But come on, in business school, can someone without real business work experience teach students how to do well in the real business world? If this is acceptable, then doctors can be trained by someone without real experience at treating patients!

   You summed things up nicely for the rage robot, but are off base on this one. Work experience doesn't matter nearly as much as it should at a literal majority of schools out there (and particularly, higher-tier research schools). I mean, look at how many BYU grads and international candidates get hired every year with at MOST one single two-month internship. People wonder why the outside world still views academia as the ivory tower, but things like this are part of the issue.

   Whether accounting professors generate theories or not is orthogonal to whether work experience helps generate research ideas or improve teaching. If your claim to fame in teaching is telling war stories from the cubicle of your three year stint as a Big 4 monkey, I really question your teaching ability. Some of our lowest rated teachers are those with more industry experience. I also find the research insights from those who worked in audit, finance, or banking to be mundane and parochial (usually)

Accounting research is a deviation from econ, just like other business research. If you have to argue, then please name one or two serious theories that accounting researchers contribute.

    Again, our current business faculty selection system is flawed. Accounting is a practical profession, just like physicians and lawyers. Can you imagine future surgeons are trained by people who have never operated on surgery? Then can you imagine people who don't have a CPA to train future CPAs? If students ask you in the classroom - professor, what is the life of an accountant like in a corporation/firm? How do you plan to answer? "go to take an intern"?

    If you have to argue that some people with work experience cannot teach well, I have to say, the % of faculty who cannot teach among those who don't have work experience is much much higher.

    The bar to becoming an accounting faculty is so low nowadays. The requirement should be - work experience + CPA + a good researcher. Similar to the clinic track for those who can teach but cannot research, there should be a "research track" for those who can only research but cannot teach. Tenure-track positions should only consider those who carry all the abovementioned credentials.

    Let's just be honest, nobody cares about GMU except for people who interviewed and think they deserve it. I'm not at GMU but I know of a few people who interviewed there and you folks should be careful because you're really close to outing yourselves as petty. I know at least one of you applied to my school (that's where I got the gossip). It's a super bad look to be salty about a lower tier school hiring someone that for all you know could be a good fit.
