LZ from Cornell to NUS?
Why he moved to NUS?
I’ve been through the tenure process and have talked with others who have been through the process at top private and big state schools. I’ve never heard this come up in letters or the tenure process.
As a thought experiment, of your favorite papers, how many can you name the corresponding author?
An instance where it matters is if you have a sloppy coauthor, who is liable to send error ridden documents to the editor or reviewers. In such cases, dropping the coauthor tends to be less viable than talking on the additional work of being the corresponding author.
I have a question. This might be the right place to ask.
Does being the corresponding author of a paper mean anything in our profession? I have seen people who are very keen to serve as the corresponding author. To me, it just means more work.
Thanks! Makes sense.

On average, you will get responses saying it doesn't matter because, on average, most co-authors aren't corresponding authors. But it matters.

Please tell us how "it matters."
There is always someone who will claim it matters.
It doesn’t. It is just the person who submitted the paper. The most likely explanation is that person is the most senior or their department doesn’t charge their research budget for submission fees. How can something like that matter?
You will always get a response on here to any question that says “x matter” or “x doesn’t matter” to try to make you worry. In general, you’re better off asking someone you know and trust. Or ask the people who seem to care why they care. But I would never choose to be the corresponding author. It’s another 30 minutes of work per round. Who cares or wants that? It’s not a big deal, but why choose it?

No. It does not matter.
We sometimes even rank the authors by their surname.
