No, there is no hope. In a normal situation I would tell you to apply to burger flipping jobs but I think even that might be difficult now. Hope your parents have a comfy basement!

While a university/college/department can definitely say that they won’t hire, a department can’t definitely say they will without budget info (which generally comes out between July and September depending on state and school).

I will be impressed by the first department that comes out and says for sure they will skip AMA and equally sure they have a line and will start the hiring process in January. That would be ballsy and may trigger a movement.
I expect most departments will put out some sort of weak-ass "we'll interview on skype/zoom in August and may hire depending on how things proceed".

With uncertainty as to how long corona will last, it seems that the latter is the most logical for departments. The former seems too binding.

If I were a rank and file recruiting committee member, I'd say WTF are we interviewing people in August when we don't know if/when we will fly them out or even if we have a line, when half the field might well postpone by several months, and when the candidates themselves may not be prepared?
I bet most faculty are not going to be in a mood to interview this August.
We have a hiring freeze at my school (big state school in the Northeast), so I highly doubt we will go to AMA this year. However, I would not be surprised if we try to hire in January. We hire most years and actually grew in enrollment during the last recession. If history repeats itself, this recession will benefit state schools and hurt more expensive private schools (except the top tier).

Yep exactly, enrollment went up as students veered away from private schools, so we hired more faculty.
