How are IO journals seen by marketing people? Would RAND, IJIO, JIE, RIO mean anything for a marketing department? Asking for a friend.
Rand is considered a top field at good places but not at bad places. 2nd tier IO journals are not worth nothing but they are well below marketing journals.

I'm a 3rd year AP. I have a phd in econ from hrm (top 10 in us), but only got a job in vlrm in europe (I didn't go to the marketing job market, only econ).
I have one solo marketing science and one r&r at jmr (coauthored with a junior). I am considering going to the marketing market this year, but I am worried that my vlrm status will not allow me to get a job. Do I stand any chance at a well-paid us tt position?

If you are connected possible to get a job in top 50. If you are not connected, very likely no. Marketing is a small field, chances are people know a lot of other people and if your references are coming from people who are not known in marketing, that is a worse signal
than it would be in a thicker market like economics. Plus you will be a 4th year AP and even with 2 that is not a good record.Sorry. You should apply nevertheless, but keep expectations realistic.
Marketing is also a much more caty field. Some strong peole on the behavorial side are awful and envious. On the quant side, shades of assholes because they think they are better. This is not an easy field to get into.

This is not an easy field to get into.Everything thus poster wrote is BS. A Marketing science and JMR is a solid record for a 3rd year AP especially if you also have a couple Econ pubs. Schools are still desperate for quants that can teach analytics classes, and if you’ve taken econometrics you can do that in your sleep. Get some solid letters and a jmp that’s digestible by non quant folks and you’ll end up with a solid placement. All this talk about how hard it is to break in is misguided. Apply broadly (100 + schools) and perfect your job talk. You’ll have plenty of options in Chicago.

I am on the hiring side of the market. And you will notice that there are few people coming from econ to marketing at mid levels. This is not because there are no applications - as I said, I am on the hiring side and I see applications. They are not taken too seriously because they are coming in late and with weak signals.
People’s possible comments:
Why does s/he want to come to marketing after 3 years as an econ prof? Must be failing in econ. Noone wants the leftovers of another field.No b-school teaching experience.
S/he should be ready for tenure in 3-5 years and will need 5-6 more As (unless you have decent econ pubs, but you prob would not want to move if you did). Not enough time.
It is absolutely hard to make it into marketing as a complete outsider. Economists in marketing are in top 20 schools, but not in lower tier. Lower tier schools tend to sway more to CB and strategy. There are decent places you could try - Tilburg, Erasmus, U Wash - which have a nice quant group and are econish, but in most of these MRM places EVERYBODY votes on hiring. And it is challanging to get the CB vote as an outsider.
Thus - work with someone known in marketing.
I respectfully disagree with the previous poster, but will not use faul language. He can give examples of people in tier 20-50 schools moving from econ to marketing after 3 years with 2 pubs. I am open to be convinced otherwise.

I'm 21b1 (the 3rd year AP). Thanks for all the input. Here is some more info, answering the questions above.
Do you have a good HRM letter?
My advisor is a top hrm in econ. Although all my letters are from econ, one of them is well known in IO and has a record of sending phd econ to marketing dpts.
Does it need to be US? I think European places are more open to this.
I am mostly interested in moving for the salary...

Even though I did not go to the marketing market, I ended up with a position in a business school (the econ dpt is part of the business school). And a jmr/mkt-science counts as much for me here as Rand. So after I had the jmp rejected at Rand, I sent it to marketing journals.

@49b5 Does the fact that I am in a business school overcome these concerns? In my application I am AP at bla bla school of business (and I have experience teaching master students in management/marketing).
Also I have no econ pubs and all my working papers are marketing related. So just by looking at my cv, it seems that although I did a phd in econ, I immediately joined marketing right after the phd.

This is why people do not want to hire outsiders. Many do not want to become a marketer, they want the money.I do enjoy research and I have ambition to publish consistently in A marketing journals. But I could do that from the place where I am now. The reason I want to move is for the salary, but that doesn't mean I am planning not to be productive...
