Does A pubs guarantee jobs?
If not, why?It doesn’t guarantee you a top ten job. Some people will not accept a job outside of a certain range. Those people might not get interviewed in that range. If they want to stay in the field, they get a postdoc or VAP, hoping- generally accurately- that another A will help them out. If they don’t want to stay in the field, they get an industry job.
Of the people who stay in the field, most I know end up doing well on the job market, but I do know one person personally who went into industry and I assume that’s what happened with someone I knew distally who had two A’s but didn’t stay in the field.
As for other reasons, we had a postdoc with severe behavioral issues who burned down all of their bridges at their doctoral institution and no one would write them letters outside of their advisor. This of course was hidden from her postdoc advisor. This person published a ton during their postdoc and has bounced around a few top jobs, and I think has tenure now. While there’s nothing wrong with their research I hope they don’t have phd students.

What about 1 or 2 r&r papers in A journals? Does it guarentee a good TT job? although they are in the first round? Assuming that you have good recommendations etc.It depends on who you compete against. It's tougher if you are in CB with that record.
What is the standard in CB to be a good candidate, like at least having one A journal publication to find a job?
Also, how r&r in A journal is perceieved compared to publication in the same journals?

Gah I tried. Genuinely one of those cases where the research quality makes it easier to admire someone from afar. Far far afar.

So the publication is not necessarily required? Submitting to A level is enough at the time of job applications?
Yep. Modal market has 8 people with an A pub. 1 in and 2 past first round is a great vita. 3 at any stage past submission puts you up there too- we know journals are capricious. At the point of one A though, you’re in great shape (even this year. Only one person had an A I thought )

Sort of. Anyone can submit. BS at Stanford had like 8 under review on the market and some of those were apparently NOT ready for prime time. It worked out, he ended up at Iowa, but I was told (because he’s a lot older than I am) that it hurt him on the market and he would have been better off trusting his faculty.

The hard truth is no one really knows. No one knows if you need an A. No one knows if you need this advisor or that advisor. The market even before COVID was not that predictable outside of a Stanford/ Wharton person getting hired at Stanford/ Wharton. Everything else is up for grabs. So maybe you and all of us would be better off ignoring all the advice. Do the research because you love doing the research. Since there are no guarantees, don't work on anything you don't love, and don't work with anyone that doesn't love you. Go on the market when you want. Go off the market when you want. Just realize that none of us know anything, and we're all just guessing. It's freeing.

No, this is really no guarantee of a TT job and you should not get your hopes up. It all depends on the context.
It’s not a flat distribution. You’re extremely unlikely to fail the R1 market with more than one A in r&r. I can think of exceptions. But those are exceptions moderated by extreme personality problems or other issues. If you’re remotely normal, having an R&R will get you a job all but a few people in the field think is good (top 50 or so).

Is it beneficial for jmcs to have a publication in the journals other than marketing such as POMS, ISR, SMJ, and so on?
Comparing to a marketing B pub, I will say it is beneficial. But Marketing A > SMJ ISR. Unless you publish in a very very decent journal such as Science or Nature.

At a top 30 or so, maybe even more restrictive than that, a top psych (JEPG, psych science, psych review) or top Econ (the usual, but also RAND and other empirical IO outlets, maybe theory but I don’t know the list and have never seen a theory field pub on a cv to evaluate) is going to be better for you than a B pub in marketing but not as good as an A
