This mad thread about Marketing on EJMR is the strongest proof of how unqualified this site is.
Hope I don’t see you applying to marketing after you fail your econ job market.

Since the marketing JM is so early (Hiring August 2020 for a start date of August 2021), is it possible that the entire market itself will just shift to Winter AMA (Feb 2021)? That would still be 6 months before an effective start date, and budgets will likely be back to normal by then.
Thoughts? Why is the marketing job market so early?

I don't understand why people keep saying schools will take a big hit due to COVID-19. Students still enroll and attend classes online. Are you saying students won't enroll unless they can attend in-person classes? Or are you saying the schools' endowment funds evaporated in the stock market?
Schools lose their endowments in such a crappy economy, donations do not come, people dont have hundred thousand to give to MBA anymore. Heck, it is not even clear international student visas can be processed to start in July. What do you mean how schools are impacted?!

You are assuming two things:
1. The already admitted MBA students decide not to enroll because they don't have money anymore (which is not likely because people usually will have secured the tuition money before applying for MBA. Also if there are no jobs they might as well go back to school.)
2 The admitted international students won't consider attending the first semester online. This will be true if it's a 1-year program, and the main goal is to get a work visa. If it's a longer program, it's not a bad idea to spend the first semester or even the first year in their home country while attending online to save money since they will eventually get to come to the US.Schools will be impacted financially for sure, the impact is probably not as big as you think.

Schools will be impacted financially for sure, the impact is probably not as big as you think.People having the money does not mean it was under the mattress If you had $200K invested in stocks in feb, now you have about 20% less. Companies pay for MBAs - or subsidize part of it. I cannot imagine that going on now. Executive education does not happen now - which is a big loss. Spouses lose their job. All of a sudden you do not have $100K to give for MBA anymore. International students also have experienced the economic shock. Do you think economy is good now in Italy, France, Spain, China?
The only way to turn this around is if people start to get fired and want to go back to school again. But even then you are talking about a small group of rich students.
If people come to their senses, they should postpone the job market. Who has the time and opportunity to prepare packages in May now to send in June?

Let me guess. You are in a relationship but no kids? Keep it that way.
Middle aged people are getting sick, losing jobs, are depressed.
Elderly are in dying in hospitals, and you need to be in contact with doctors about care decisions hourly. Or they are trapped in homes and cannot go out to get their needs.
Schools and daycares are closed. Many phd students have small children. Now they have to sit down to take care of their children stuck in a 1 bedroom apartment in some places.
Some students are stuck somewhere else, internationally.Even if students are not bothered by these, advisors and committee members are. University HR and staff are -- these are the people who needs to open and approve positions and create an application portal for people.
People cannot be bothered by the job market when they are worried about their lives and basic needs.

Oh this definitely has huge financial impacts on universities. Private schools won’t get as many donations. Public schools won’t get as much state funding. Most schools has hiring freezes so very few will be looking for candidates for 2021-2022 year. That means few candidates will get good jobs this year and more will be on the market for 2022-2023. The market will be screwed for years to come.
