Expect nothing less from this thread. As the number of jobs shrink, people start to get ugly.
Don't get ugly. Apply to industry. Amazon, Facebook, Google etc hire PhDs. And make you work on challenging problems with twice your academic pay in 10 years. Senior academics are moving one by one to industry, anyway. Chicago, Stanford, Columbia, Northwestern... all have at least one in industry currently, and some will not come back. More are leaving.

It really depends on what your goals are. As someone who worked in industry for ten years, I will never go back. I continue to do consulting which is a great constant reminder as to why I left. You can 100% make more money in industry, however there are a lot of other offsetting factors that you need to consider. Based on working at a large publicly traded organization this is my experience:

Industry Pros:
Higher earning potential
More career paths to take/opportunity for advancement
Don't have to deal with students
Don't have to deal with reviewers

Industry Cons:
Zero control over your hours worked which leads to...
Bad work/life balance
Potential for terrible bosses
Inability to avoid coworkers who are awful
Projects are often boring and provide no value to the organization

For me, the autonomy I have achieved in academia makes up completely for the lower earning potential and opportunities for advancement. I found the corporate environment absolutely awful. I will take the idiocy of university administration over the idiocy of corporate management any day.

I like the ability to go see my kids do their various activities, not having to ask for time off, and living in an area with access to tons of activities I enjoy and a low cost of living. The advice I always give my students is to figure out what really makes you happy and choose the path that is most likely to give that to you. Either path can lead to a sense of fulfillment, you just have to know yourself, your skillset, and what you want out of your career and life.

But the original claim is still true. It's a bad signal to wait until you've failed out of the academic market and THEN start applying to tech. Most of the good tech jobs will have already been filled by that point and you will have wasted a lot of time prepping for academic interviews rather strengthening your tech resume/interview skills.

The two markets value pretty different things.

I think he/she was talking about the timing. If one decides to go industry, he/she may go the market earlier because (1) more job opportunities (2) more time to prepare for it. Otherwise, you may have very limited time to be fully prepared for a industry job. And fewer job opportunities.

This is not true. Amazon at this point has the highest number of PhD economists than any other Econ department and is only going after top talent in academia. That is why Hartmans, Zettelmeyers and Netzers of marketing are now at Amazon.

I wonder...this guy could get a Marketing TT job with his pubs, but he doesn’t have a Marketing PhD. So maybe the fit wasn’t really there.

I also wonder if this career path is really more profitable. At this point, he would be tenured, which means about 200k/ year in academia. Is he (or someone like him) making more?
