If deadwood were not allowed in academia, why would anyone want to get an academic job?
Old dudes, please retire

I agree but think maybe they should move down to e.g. teaching professor or similar title and a lower salary along the lines of assoc prof level rather than full prof. I believe the salary drop can effectively happen in the US system by not applying raises, but not where I am.

Absolutely, a large proportion hate it. Maybe it's an attention issue with this generation of students constantly distracted by their phones and online social media, unless they are tethered physically in a lecture hall they can't concentrate long enough to go through anything alone.
They can’t concentrate on class either. Half are texting at any given moment.

Just want to reiterate the point about TT lines disappearing when people retire. I am at an ULRM place, and we have had 5 people retire in the last 3 years. Our department kept only 1 of those TT lines. Instead of TT, we hired several lecturers that teach huge classes.

I agree 100%. You can make 2-3 times more money in industry.. Deadwood is the only incentive that academia offers which industry doesn't
Most people don't end up being deadwood. The attraction of tenure is that, for risk-averse people, you can really focus on doing things that are public goods. Otherwise, there's little reason to ever be an editor, an advisor, an administrator, a mentor, a reviewer, etc.

Don’t shame old dudes but argue against tenure. Write a paper, raise a voice, start a petition against the tenure system. Otherwise you just want to take the old dude’s place.
Tenure is on the way out. With a bit of luck the old dudes will keep it, but we young ones outside the top 20ish are done.
