PSU they even placed at penn this year
Penn State vs Rochester vs USC vs ASU

Half of you say USC is the best of the bunch. The other half say it’s the worst. Why is that?
USC also happens to be in the by far the best place to live, especially compared to state college and Rochester. How does it compare to ASU, location-wise?Location? You’re there for 5-7 years tops and you’re there to get a PHD. The only way location should factor in is where the place with the least distractions and that would be penn state and maybe Rochester

The department wasn't that good 4 years ago and it has hired a lot of great people over the past 3 years at all levels (junior AP and full profs) so people don't really know what to make of it.

yeah, and make sure you're very depressed as well, it's great for productivity I've heard.

guys can you stop deluding future grad students...
Rochester and PSU are for sure better programs than USC and ASU. PSU is trending upwards, Rochester downwards but I think they are ranked equally now. Also, OP said he wants to do Macro/International which also points towards PSU. If only remotely possible that you end up doing Trade, PSU dominates all of Rochester, USC, and ASU by lightyears. I'd go for PSU.
Location doesn't matter during PhD since you are miserable 24/7 anyway except for real wages (which would be harrible in CA). PSU is known for paying the most generous stipends of all the 4 schools mentioned by OP. Be smart, OP. Don't fall for the trolls
-
Is ASU really that good to be in the same tier as others?
Asu is a third tier school, low end LRM (but be aware lots of asu shills on this board)
Rochester used to be Ivy level , now MRM
USC on the rise, solid MRM now
Psu is higher LRM, placement is okThis
what did OP do to you that you hate him/her so much to keep giving advice like this. USC is not even in the same league as Rochester or Penn State. just look at the grad school rankings, USC and ASU are borderline top 40. stop promoting your own school, it doesn’t make it better. Rochester and Penn State are the places to go to, choose any of them

PSU bro here. I had a similar choice/interests as you. I went to PSU. Strong in international, especially trade, but you can do macro too. Macro faculty has a lot of turnover, but the department is supposedly committed to addressing this issue. Faculty is committed to students.

ha! I knew there are PSU guys on ejmr, why didn't you intervene earlier? Trolls here are going crazy with USC claiming USC is better than Rochester and PSU haha

If location is that important to offset any “depression”. You’re not gonna make it past year 2 in any PhD program regardless of where it’s located. You gotta toughen up or you’ll be drowning after the first month

Don’t worry about me, I’m an AP at a MRM department so I’m tough enough. Oh and gtfo undergrad
