   Brother, don't do it. Fire up LinkedIn and get a tech job as a data scientist. Stay out of San Francisco, LA, Seattle, DC, and NYC. Make money, buy a house, start your own business, achieve 9 figure wealth. Academia is no place for a talented and ambitious young man.

   Honestly, I hate to say it, but I agree with this. Unless you can break the top 10, I really don't see the value in killing yourself for a phd in a super weak and declining academic market with everything stacked against you. You can find research-type jobs elsewhere.

   Get a job, save, and start your own thing later if you want.

   A 168Q on the GRE given your background is surprising. You should be getting 170Q in your sleep.
   Also, math grades aren't great.
   Your letters sound week and you have limited relevant research experience.
   Do a pre-doc.

   I take back my pre-doc advice because now I see that you're doing theory.

   To add on this, you have no idea how competitive top 20 is. I know several top 5 predocs with 3.8+ GPA got into barely one or two top 20s last year.

   Btw, I only got two offers from top 20 schools(with several waiting lists from top 11-20), so breaking top 20 was not easy for me(competition among internationals is just insane. Any advice from domestic students never help you predict your admission result). You should definitely think about doing RA or euro master if you wanna get into top 20 program.

   3.7 masters gpa is bad. apply to top 40ish.

For people who questioned: notice that I finished grad micro and field courses in my area of interest during my 2nd undergrad yr, and have had/been doing 6 researches in differential topology, automated mechanism design, percolation and Gaussian fields, etc. more info is omitted, but I worked hard

   BS. those math courses are completely inconsistent with your op. "six researches"? wth does that mean. not to mention: in what universe does a top 80 (!) school let a kid who got Bs in analysis and calc 3 takes grad micro during sophomore year lol. i know applicants with stats way better than those in your op not get into top 20 this cycle. this is BS.

   - or come from top 10 undergrad/ top 5 LAC
   Furthermore none had the same courses as OP described. (Automated mechanism design, WTH do you mean lmao)
   Since you claim you know mechanism design I ll ask you just a very simple question that everyone should know: explain the model in the paper “Efficient mechanisms for bilateral trading” by Myerson, the results, the intuition, etc,…

    Michigan now has 6 faculty in micro theory group with main appointment in Econ dept , and a few faculty with joint appointment (by courtesy) in business schools and school of information. No way that op could get into the program yet give up the choice to a predoc. Similar reasonings apply to Caltech and Duke. The only possible offer if there is one should be from UCSB.
