Pursuing a Ph.D. in Strategy. Is it worth?

How about theoretical research in strategy? What’s the prospect like?
Only if you work with well known names. Otherwise, your chances are next to zero. "Theory" in strategy is just word soup. It's all about telling a fancy story that the editor and his 2-3 hand-picked reviewers will like and enjoy. So basically, 100% conformity and just add a little twist.
May not make a difference if you’re not going to industry
99% of strategy people don't go into industry. You have an almost certain probability of getting a TT job even if you have a PhD from a ~100-ranked institution. It may not be the best TT position, but if everyone coming from a 100-ranked or above institution can get a TT job if they so wished...very few are going into industry.
We are hiring macro this year. We also noted this about some Chinese students picking an easier path:
https://www.bo-yang.org/home
https://journals.aom.org/doi/abs/10.5465/AMBPP.2022.16063abstract
They tend to also coauthor with only persons from the same origin. And mostly work on China related topics.Do be fair, how is that different from any other field? All fields are now captured by Zhang.

Agree. The market is amazing. Many posts. Low supply of PhDs overall.
how's the market this year?
you can check for yourself here under the macro tab: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1yfzDTxgndA-wkn8Tml5QNjgLAgfbutHLGjYM8bJOYo0/edit#gid=0
(micro = OB)
pretty good market this year, all things considered -

Out of touch and not true. AACSB removed strategy from the undergraduate requirements and many B schools are cutting it from the curriculum.
It’s a dying field and there’s crazy competition for jobs. Getting worse each year.
Try Accounting. Better yet, dont do a phd and save yourself a lot of suffering.

Not true, outdated. Strategy is far from dying. The field is very open minded about new frontiers such as AI and ML. Perfect supply demand in job market. My friends all do well in landing good academic jobs. Macro researcher here.

Just look at these candidates with pubs. They all work with well known names.

To give you an idea how clubby some parts are, I am tenured in a strategy department that is much more "economics"-like, and I literally had never heard the terms "macro" and "micro" used in the above way before. A bunch of strategy departments are basically OB/psych/sociology departments and will never hire you. Honestly, you should be looking for ones where there are any seniors who have published in decent econ journals.

=================================You sound like an id/0it. What part of AACSB removing the requirement dont you understand? Unless your a sa/d/is/t I dont know why anyone would direct anyone to do a hopeless program in strategy. It has 0 industry relevance and the job market for it has been collapsing.
In fact, this is just an odd thread overall and seems to be some ch/ina/ma/n talking with himself promoting this field. No one in strategy actually thinks the field is thriving and most acknowledge it is in fact in terminal decline. Entrepreneurship has been growing, but that field is a joke too and has a laundry list of problems of its own that will spell its demise before long. I'm unfortunately in it and I'm looking for the exit.
