To do economics. Economics isn’t armchair pontificating anymore.
Then what makes me different from data scientists? And how can I learn those tons of computer languages while I am econ major?
I think it depends on the individual task question that you get sometimes the questions are data science question sometimes economics disciplinary lines are blurred outside of academic departments. To learn skills read imitate and practice.

So are you saying it is totally necessary in private sector whether I am an economist/econometrician or financer ?

No it depends on the group you are in and what they are using where I am working it’s a mix of Excel and R with some Python but Python use is likely to increase.

Exactly. Now you're starting to realize how dumb you actually are. Lmao.

Just rewrite all your course notes in Python.

Pretty much anything you would ever want to do in Econ I use Python for.

I’ve been coding Python for about 5 years, I did a few online tutorials to start. Then just thought about what I needed to do then did it.

Want to optimize a portfolio? Estimate betas for 100s of companies? Estimate yield curves? Predict default based on company statistics / personal details?
Come on...

If you're eyeing industry jobs, a data scientist and an economics PhD grad is indistinguishable, since you both will possess the same level of knowledge. This is because both types of graduates will have the baseline statistical/econometric know-how and of course, possess halfway-decent coding skills in either R or Python.
Of course, I'm referring to someone who's prepared to enter industry, and not a failing micro theorist that realised he couldn't make it in the 4th year and then scrambled for an industry job. These kinds of people aren't comparable as they'll probably enter the market with close to zero real-world coding skills and lament about how the job market is unfair.
