   Several UK schools are interviewing me (1 in London). Do you really barely survive with your salary or are you actually having decent lives despite the impression on EJMR?

   Look, without going on a tirade here, you will struggle. Some people struggle more than others depending on the institution/location, but no one would say they are thriving.

   Academia in the UK is a either for very well of Brits or people from countries with much much much worse economies/govts.

   For me every month felt like a financial battle. It was like being in a wave pool where you have 2 inches above your head and concrete on your ankles.

   IMHO you should stay far far away, its a toxic place of insanity. If you make the unfortunate mistake and go, make sure you have a clear exit plan.

   You have been warned.

   There is no tenure in the UK, its just hard to fire you once you are "confirmed" for an indefinite contract. They can still fire you though, and have been pushing out deadwoods left and right before I left. I saw the writing on the wall and got the hell out...

   At the dumpster fire Russell Group I was at you got like maybe 5-10k for a promotion

   Someone who starts on 36-45k as an AP in finance won't see 140/160k by getting promoted, short of winning a nobel prize. You'd need to start on much more and be in one of the select number of places that pay more that are a small minority. My experience is that 140/160k is very high for a professor in the UK. Even 120k is high. Of course someone from LSE will post saying that's not true I'm on that, the UK is heterogeneous etc.

   LSE 90k Econ Ap , likely less if not credible competition

   UCL 75k Econ Ap is likely the ceiling

   Cambridge 70k + variable 5k on college deals

   Warwick 70k or so

   QMUL type places 50-60k

   Below top 10: <50k

   Standard scale (e.g floor on salary) 35K in midgetssex type places.

   The above is correct +/-10%

    I’m a non London AP making about £55k and have a pretty nice life because my parents give me a 6 figure sum to buy a house

    Unless you have independent sources of income/wealth or a high earning partner, housing costs in the UK are just too high to enable any desirable quality of life, in a decent location

    Professor is harder to know.

    Top of the Econ market is likely 200K, including quite a bit of soft money

    Then, much like the US, depends on high profile and outside offers.

    Most of the Best active senior people in top 5 places, but not very very top in country, are around 140-160K

    Professors outside that but still respectable places are 100-120k

    Below top 10, god knows but I would say it tops around 100

    In all of these you'll find professors making substantially less than top people in their department. These are deadwoods or near deadwoods with no credible outside offers in last decade.

    Again, given what I know, the above numbers +/-10%, should cover 90% of the relevant populations

    An AP in the US might be on 130k but they aren’t consuming that full salary - a lot will be saved up for healthcare in retirement and college tuition for their kids. In the UK you don’t need those things, so adjust number accordingly

    Note something about the UK that’s always missed is that free (at the point of use) healthcare and college tuition means need substantially less savings
    An AP in the US might be on 130k but they aren’t consuming that full salary - a lot will be saved up for healthcare in retirement and college tuition for their kids. In the UK you don’t need those things, so adjust number accordingly

    I'm curious how Thatcher was able to legally achieve this. If a uni is "private" i.e. not government funded, wouldn't they be exempt from this rule. In USA, I could see this being done by statute on a state-wide basis for state unis, but not for private colleges.

    I make 50k in a research only position in the provinces, so the money goes reasonably far. It's a decent life - basically no admin or teaching obligations. I work 25 hours a week.

    I can't imagine moving into a faculty position in the same or a similarly ranked university. Everyone looks a decade older than they are.

    Stay away unless you're going to an elite school or have strong locational preferences.

    Unis in the UK are public. But the point of no tenure is that most contracts are open-eneded, just like any other employment contract.

    I live in a pretty cheap area of the UK on a 45k gross salary. On top I teach some executive education and have the odd consulting contract. Say 65k gross a year, montly around GBP3500 after tax. Take 200 of council tax I have GBP3200. My wife earns much less, say GBP2000. Our mortgage for a detached renovated 4-bed + 2 bathroom with a 20% deposit is arond GBP1000. Childcare is taken before NI and tax, so 1 nursery for less than 2yo is GBP650 after tax full time and the older child cheaper say 300.

    Revenue after all tax including council= 5300
    Mortgage= 1000
    utilities= 250
    childcare= 950

    we are left with GBP3100 which makes us comfortable. We also get a tiny bit of money for child benefit I don't remember how much it goes on my wife's account.
