How is he doing on the senior market? He has been out about 7 weeks.

With his record, even McDonalds will be tough.
I was going to make a joke about a job he could take based on an event that defined his life... but it was a bit too tasteless.
Honestly he will something to do but definitely not in academia or some big firm. Who know, he might even have the chance to open a store or restaurant or something.

Are there people here who have met him? What was his reputation like in academia before the incident?
Irrelevant. He repeatedly bludgeoned his wife with an exercise bar to the extent that the police who arrived thought that she had been shot in the head with a shotgun. If the press is to be believed, she was divorcing him after years of domestic abuse and he snapped for the last time.
Sorry, he might be your friend, but you can't put him in front of students now. Maybe in 10-20 years something can be worked out in that domain. Right now he clearly needs to seek a penitent life for a long time. Also anger management classes need to be in his life for the rest of his life. It was an extraordinarily violent case.

He has already returned to the payroll. Apparently the Dean and Chair have assigned him a 4-4 course load for next academic year to get rid of him. Personally, I would quit before if I had to teach four courses of ECON1 every semester, but he might need the money.
