   Imagine a country investing billions of its taxpayers money over several generations in administrative data of extremely high quality only to give it away for free to random foreign researchers. A country is supposed to serve its citizens first, and foreigners second. Not the other way around.

   I can't tell if this is sarcasm or not. On the off chance that it is not sarcasm, the service provided to its citizens is to permit the highest quality research on questions of national interest not just the best research only a swede or norwegian is capable of.

   What exactly should be done? Obviously it’s bad that the papers has (seemingly big?) errors. But what would you want UCLA to do?

   Of course, but then you'd have to pay for it. You wouldn't expect a company to give out its proprietary data for free. Scandinavian countries, though world-leading in financial aid on a per-capita basis, are not charity organizations. I can't understand why this needs to be stressed, here of all places...

   + it's a counterbalance to US/Ivy league bias which runs totally amok in the Econ profession and really has no place. We can't have this, at the same as we simply donate the data to the top 5 mafia. There are limits to your influence in academia, and it's time you learn to accept that.

   Does the nation want high quality research, or just to benefit a handful of specific norwegians/swedes? Is this what the taxpayers signed up for? Why go through the trouble of collecting data and not just hand over money to those particular people?

   Are you out of this world? Nothing will happen to her, nobody gives a sh... at UCLA about it. It jus reveals how the profession operates, cheating and cooking up results is ubiquitous.

   Nothing will happen. Most papers are shaky to begin with. Retractions happen only for papers that got considerable attention so that ex post somebody might try to replicate them, but many more published papers are just cr*p and nobody will even know. In this case, the stakes were quite high at least for the individuals involved (eg, PG arguably needed this publication to show independence and be tenured at UCLA Anderson), but now nobody cares anymore, including probably the authors

    The Journal of Applied Econometrics replication is up, but incorrectly states in the abstract that they successfully replicate G&S findings! Can't the editor/referees point out that the replication was not successful? Or is this the only way to publish a replication, stating that the replication was successful and letting the reader figure it out for themselves?
