I’m at a 2-3 “balanced” b-school. I’ve grown sick of the length of review process and the politics. Looking to move to industry, but I’m wondering what my resume should look like. My cv is like 12 pages. Cut down to 2? I have about 7 years of work experience (payroll at a F50 and software developer for a mid-sized software company) before heading back to school to get a PhD.
Senior AP looking to move to Industry: resume form?

Industry bro here. Cut from 12 pages but keep the key publications. Those are your main achievements after all, and many of your interviewers could be ex academics. Sometimes I get resumes that leave out all academic output, and that gives me no idea how to evaluate the last ~10 years of those candidates' carers.

Final tip: your resume however you tweak it is unlikely to get noticed by recruiters because you don't fit the mold, unless you target select places that have hired APs in the past. Instead, reach out to your contacts, even that random student in your grad cohort that you never talked to, and try to get a referral.

great advice, going through the traditional brute force approach of blasting a CV to a job vacancy on LinkedIn or Indeed won't go anywhere unfortunately
try to see if you can apply online and contact a 1st or 2nd degree connection or an internal recruiter attached to the listing

(Things to keep on the service side are organization of large conferences, leadership of major initiatives, and perhaps number of students advised. Cut small time administration, random grants, and anything to do with teaching.)
OP here. Does the teaching, if you have high scores/awards, give a signal that you can communicate well?

In a similar boat to the OP.
What's the general advice in applying for jobs? The issue with senior APs is that we have a couple of years of academic experience (on top of the years leading up to the PhD), but we easily could have minimal to zero industry experience. Applying to postings on LinkedIn goes nowhere as I'm suspecting most of those postings robo-sort on years of experience and name of employer. Moreover, only a few places (e.g. basically FAANG) have any interest in hiring data scientists with PhDs. That significantly limits the number of opportunities that one can apply for --- and not to mention you basically need referrals to go anywhere with FAANG.
Any tips / suggestions?

Yes, resume format is very important. Since it depends on whether you will be hired or not. I recently got a job, I took my resume seriously, even asked for help https://resumeservicescan.com/resumegets-review I was given a complete and informative resume for my vacancy. And I was immediately taken on an internship, so be careful with the drafting.

Recruiters are mostly one of those efficiencies injected into an inefficient market that usually doesn't work as well as expected
